Chimed Rigdzin Rinpoche gave the Gongpa Zangthal initiation in the end of the 90's in Ruffieu, in East of France. The Gongpa Zangthal is a collection of related to dzogchen texts included in the northern Terma (Jangter) whose Rinpoche was a holder. First, during two days, we receaved the elaborate initiation (Zhi tro), then rinpoche gave the reading transmission of Tulku Tsurlo's (Tshulthrim Zangpo) commentary about that, and this took several days. In the morning, Rinpoche gave the lung and in the afternoon, we practiced the Big Rigdzin together. The commentary deals with the main points of the dzogchen way, from the ordinary preliminaries to the advanced practices of Tekchö and Tögal. It ends with the explanations concerning the bardos.
After these transmissions, as he said many times that it was important for us to understand what we were given, Rinpoche asked Tulku Thondup to translate the commentary from tibetan to english, In the foreword of his translation:, Tulku Thondu Rinpoche writes:
For the last two years, Tertul Chhimed Rigdzin Rinpoche, one of the main disciples of Tulku Tshulthrim Zangpo and a holder of the Jangter lineage, repeatedly asked me to translate into english Ornaments of the Visions of the Knowledge-Holders. He is the fourth incarnation of Terchen Nüden Dorje (1802-1864) of Khordong Monastery. My simple understanding is not equipped to translate such a profound text, but my reasoning with Tertul Rinpoche on this ground failed to sway him. So, from the beginning of 2000, I started to translate the text...
Once the english translation was done, Rinpoche used it as a basis and made it translate into other languages as French, German and Polish. That's how the text was made available to those who received the proper transmissions. Once, I asked Rinpoche how I could one day be able to practice according and based on this text. His answer was:
"In the jangter tradition, first you have to recite one million benza guru mantras. Then you must make the fivefold accumulations (5X100 000) of the five nails (Jangter Ngöndro). But as you done those of another lineage, it is ok. Then you have to practice the Rigdzin Doungdrub for some years (but as you practiced the big rigdzin for a long time, as the meaning is the same, it's ok). Then you have to practice the Jangter Thugdrub for 2 or 3 years. Then, it will be time to find a teacher who acccepts to guide you for the advanced practices." He clearly explained that this text is just a written basis but that the crucial instructions are never written, only said from the master's mouth to the student ears (Nyen tri). The text is not enough by itself to be able to practice successfully the khorde rushen, tekchöd and tögal.

Il y a quatre niveaux d'initiations, de la plus élaborée à la simplissime), sur deux jours, puis Rinpoche fit la lecture rituelle (lung) du commentaire écrit par Tulku Tsullo sur le sujet, ce qui se déroula sur plusieurs jours. Le loung se déroulait le matin et nous pratiquions la Grande Rigdzin l'après midi. Ce commentaire aborde l'essentiel de la voie Dzogchen, depuis les préliminaires ordinaires jusqu'aux pratiques avancées de Tekchöd et Tögal. Il se conclut par l'enseignement sur les bardos.
Après ces transmissions, jugeant qu'il était important que nous comprenions ce que nous avions reçu, Rinpoche demanda à Tulku Thondup Rinpoche de traduire le texte du tibétain en anglais. A ce propos, voici ce que dit Tulku Thondup dans la préface de sa traduction:
...Au cours des deux dernières années, Tertrul Chhimed Rigdzin Rinpoche, l'un des principaux disciples de Tulku Tshulthrim Zangpo et détenteur de la lignée du Jangter, m'a demandé avec insistance de traduire en anglais "Les ornements des Visions des Détenteurs de Connaissance."; Il est la quatrième incarnation de Terchen Nüden Dorje (1802-1864) du monastère de Khordong. Ma simple compréhension n'est pas outillée pour traduire un texte si profond mais mon argumentation avec Tertrul Rinpoche ne put le convaincre. Aussi, à partir de début janvier 2000, j'ai commencé à traduire ce texte...
Une fois la traduction anglaise achevée, Rinpoche la fit traduire en différentes langues dont le français, l'allemand et le polonais. Cette traduction fut ainsi mise à la disposition de ceux qui en avaient reçu les transmissions. En une occasion, je demandai à Rinpoche comment pouvoir espérer un jour pratiquer en me basant sur ce texte. Il me répondit:
"Dans la tradition du Jangter, il faut d'abord réciter un million de benza gourou mantras. Ensuite, il faut faire les accumulations (5X100 000) des Cinq Clous (Ngöndro du Jangter). Mais si tu as fait les accumulations selon une autre lignée ça va. Ensuite il faut pratiquer quelques années le Rigdzin Doungdrup, mais vu que tu pratiques la Grande Rigdzin depuis longtemps et que c'est vraiment similaire, ça va. Ensuite il faut pratiquer le Jangter Thug Drub pendant deux ou trois ans. Alors tu pourras chercher un enseignant qui accepte de te guider pour les pratiques avancées." Il m'expliqua clairement que ce texte n'est qu'une base écrite et que les instructions les plus cruciales ne sont données que verbalement, de bouche de maître à oreille d'élève (nyen tri). Le texte n'est pas en soi suffisant pour espérer pouvoir pratiquer fructueusement les Khorde rushen, tekchöd et tögal.
