Memories with C. R. Lama (2): India (a) Souvenirs d'avec C. R. Lama (2): Inde (a)

A few years after meeting him, Rinpoche proposed Nathalie and I to travel with him in India. So after joining him in Freiburg for the first public dzogchen teachings we received from him, we flew to Delhi and then, during several month, he took care of us with the great help of his Son Tulku Migmed. Jomo Gudrun, who met him at the same time at the same place in Dordogne, had become his assistant and was also with us and so we travelled in different places according to Rinpoche's agenda. He was quite involved in the Mahabodi Society at that time so we visited places like Calcutta and Varanassi/Sarnath because he had important people to meet there. In Sarnath, we could meet Samdhong Rinpoche, the head of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (future head of tibetan govt in exile)  who was a good friend of him and Urgyen Tenzin, who was teaching at the Institute thanks to the help of C.R. Lama and who was living with his family in the small house built by Lama Anagarika Govinda.

For the first time, we could meet Amala, Rinpoche's Khandro and Tulku Urgyen, his other son, who were living in the University quarters of Siliguri. From there we went for the first time to Tashiding.

Tashiding is the most sacred place in Sikkhim, strongly blessed by Padmasambhava himself and great beings like Rigzin Goddem and many others, and C. R. Lama explained to us how beneficial it is to be able to practice there : « One day practice in Tashiding brings the same amount of merits as one year practice elsewhere. », he said, and this is confirmed in many texts including termas. By advertising like that, Tashiding became over the years a must stay for many of C. R. Lama's students who spent time there on solitary retreats. The respect the local people had to C. R. Lama helped a lot and although there was no possibility of accomodation in or near the gompa, if you came there and said you were C.R. Lama's student, local people would manage to provide you bed and fooding for a cheap price so you could stay for weeks up there without worrying about material purpose.

During this trip, living day and night with Rinpoche, I could really see how special he was. For example, he could read in my mind just as if it was an opened book. I remember once in Gangtok, we had to ask for a special permit to go and visit Pemayangtse monastery so Tulku Migmed spent about one day to get it. When he came back successful, Rinpoche said : « Good, we'll go tomorow. » Out of my usual laziness, I couldn't avoid thinking :  « I hope we won't start too early in the morning. » This was in my mind, I didn't utter a word but Rinpoche looked at me with a mischievious smile and immediately answered : « Oh yes Patrice, we'll have to go early : it's quite a long drive. We'll leave at five AM. »

Inde (a)
